Welcome little Asher!!
Yes, much to our delighted surprise we welcomed our son, Asher Carleton Edwards, to the world about a month early! He had just decided that he was ready to join us. Monday night around 8pm, I was sitting on the couch reading my Hypno-birthing book, practicing breathing techniques when my water broke. Since we both had Tuesday off of work, we were planning on spending the day tying up loose ends with baby things--getting the car seat ready finishing touches on the room, washing the clothes....but he had another idea!
Kevin rushed to get a bag of things together and when we arrived at the hospital I was 2 cm dilated and the contractions were 2 min. apart (in hypno-birthing we call them "surges", not contractions....). I labored for about 7 hours--with no drugs. Around 4:30 all of the sudden I KNEW it was time for him to come...and I think the whole floor heard me! The nurse came running in, checked me and said "DON"T PUSH"...like it is that easy. They set everything up, I pushed for about 30 minutes and Asher was born at 5:02am November 11th--11/11!
Despite being early, he weighed 6lbs 6oz and is 19 inches long. He is very healthy and all of the Dr.'s and nurses were very impressed with our family effort to bring Asher into the world. Kevin was an AMAZING partner with me the whole way making me feel relaxed and empowered to follow our birthing plan. After the birth I was able to walk around, Asher was very alert and everyone was commenting on the strength that Kevin and I showed. We feel so lucky to have had the birth we desired--and now the most amazing gift of all--our sweet Asher.
Asher means fortunate; blessed; happy--and that is certainly how he makes us feel. His initials "Ace" we predict will become a nickname...and when used as a nickname has the meaning of "one who excels"....we are certain that this little man will have many adventures and accomplishments ahead.
We are home now and adjusting to life as parents. He is such a precious gift. We are looking forward to the days ahead.
Thanks to everyone who called, emailed and sent good thoughts our way today. We will return emails and calls when we can :) My mom is here for two weeks helping out, which is really nice--especially since we were not exactly "prepared"!!
Love to you all,
Allison, Kevin and Asher
